Salem Speedway honors top drivers

Track champions were crowned and numerous other honors were handed out recently at the 26th annual Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery Awards Ceremony.

More than 150 drivers, owners, mechanics, sponsors and guests gathered at Cornerstone Hall in Salem for the season-ending event. The top 10 finishers in all three Salem Speedway divisions were honored.

Season champions honored were Shawn Smith of Louisville, Lucas Oil Great American Stocks; Mike Kestler of Louisville, Kentucky, O’Reilly Auto Parts Pure Stocks; and Dillon Kaelin of Louisville, Portland Recycling Front Wheel Drive Stocks.

Rookie of the Year honors went to Tim Rivers of Salem (Great American Stocks), Jeremy Hopper of Memphis, Indiana (Pure Stocks) and Dillon Kaelin (Front Wheel Drive Stocks).

Six Sigma Crew Chief of the Year Awards were presented to Richie Alexander (Great American Stocks), Jarrett Waddell (Pure Stocks) and Carl Kaelin Jr. (Front Wheel Drive Stocks).

Smith was awarded the Lucas Oil Performance Award for the Great American Stock division, as he was the only driver to complete 100 percent of available laps (325 of 325) in feature competition during the 2014 season.

The Duragloss Car Care Products “Jerry Norris Memorial” Best Appearing Car Award was presented to Brian Bayer.

Salem Speedway technical director Travis Kern was the recipient of the Boyd Smedley Memorial Award presented annually by radio station WUME-FM.

Prior to the awards ceremony Salem Speedway track owner Owen Thompson addressed the gathering about the just completed season and the upcoming year. The 2015 season will be the 21st under the direction of the Thompson family.
