Can this year’s Braves squad break stretch of losses to Owls?

The best girls basketball game of the season in Jackson County could very well take place at Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium tonight.

It’s the battle of the powerhouses, as the Seymour Owls host the Brownstown Central Braves at 7:30 p.m.

The Owls have started the season on a roll. At 5-0, the Owls are hoping to make waves in a stacked Hoosier Hills Conference. But it hasn’t always come easy for Seymour. On Tuesday, the Owls defeated Bloomington South 59-56

in overtime.

Seymour juniors Kayla Griffin and Maci Lubker have stepped up offensively in the five-game stretch. Lubker is averaging 13.2 points through five games. She is getting the job done mostly behind the 3-point line but is also putting some numbers up from the charity stripe.

Griffin is averaging 11 points per game and has come up in the clutch for the Owls in the fourth quarter multiple times.

But the Owls are getting contributions from every player getting minutes — it’s a team effort on both ends of the floor. Almost all five starters are averaging double figures in points.

Perhaps the most underrated part of the Owls’ game is their defense. Seymour is allowing 46.8 points per game and constantly mixing up its defenses to overwhelm its opposition. They use man-

to-man, zones and presses at any time in a game.

Last season, the Braves fell to the Owls 59-66 on their home floor. The Braves have lost nine straight games to the Owls, with the last win coming in a 77-67 BCHS victory Dec. 2, 2004.

As of Tuesday, the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has the Braves ranked 15th-best in Class 3A.

At 3-1 this season, Brownstown’s only loss this season came to Class 4A Columbus East on Nov. 25.

With nine days of rest before their game against the Owls, Brownstown players have had their sights set on Seymour — especially the seniors. The battle-tested Braves boast seven seniors on their 2014 roster.

This is a high-octane offense for Brownstown, averaging 59.5 points per game. The tandem of seniors Brooke Ebbing and Riley Wischmeier will test the Seymour defense.

Ebbing, a guard, is leading Jackson County in points per game at 21.5, while forward Wischmeier is putting up 11.5 per contest.

With the strong inside and outside game, the Braves are able to get lots of good looks at the basket on the offensive end.

Thus far this season, Brownstown has seen its ups and downs on defense. In its four games, the team has given up 53, 37, 47 and 73 points.
