Naomi Gambrell

Naomi Belle Gambrel, 91, of Crothersville, passed away at 11:05 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

Born July 22, 1923, in Shelby County, she was the daughter of Everet Elmer Stainbrook and Amelia (Wright) Wendelboe.

Naomi was a 1941 graduate of Shelbyville High School. She retired from Vallonia State Tree Nursery in 1985.

She was a member of Community Church in Brownstown, Tampico Extension Homemakers Club for more than 50 years, Jackson County Extension Homemakers Past Presidents Club and a leader of Tampico Sunshine 4-H Club for 25 years. She was a charter member of Hickory Hills Golf Club, where she was league champion and made 12 holes-in-one during her golf career, with the last one being when she was 78. She enjoyed planting flowers and sewing.

On Aug. 23, 1941, she married Charles M. Gambrel in Greenfield. The couple were married for 73 years, and he survives in Crothersville.

Besides her husband, survivors include five children, Donald (Ruth Ann) Gambrel of Seymour, Dick (Edith) Gambrel of Versailles, Robert (Connie) Gambrel of New Palestine, Peggy (Steve) Hauer of Scottsburg, and William (Dilcia) Gambrel of Dominican Republic; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Howard and Thurman Stainbrook; a sister, Edith Weber; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Gambrel.

Naomi was a wonderful, helpful, supportive, caring, very sweet wife, mom and grandma. Her family describes her as being the best she could possibly be at all of those and they are going to truly miss her.

The funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Adams Funeral Home and Crematory in Crothersville.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Russell Chapel Cemetery following the service.
