Tri Kappa offering college scholarships

The state organization of Tri Kappa will award a variety of $1,000 scholarships to college students throughout Indiana in the spring.

Tri Kappa has provided scholarship awards since 1914 acknowledging students on the local, provincial and state levels in the United States and Canada, according to a news release from the Gamma Phi associate chapter in Seymour.

Chapters, provinces and the state organization combined currently give nearly $500,000 annually honoring academic achievement.

Nancy Erp, Gamma Phi associate chapter scholarship chairwoman, is currently accepting applicants for the following:

  • Twelve academic scholarships will be awarded and additional at-large scholarships could be awarded depending on the funds. The scholarships have a value of $1,000. To apply, students must be currently enrolled in bachelors or graduate program and have completed at least one academic year. Criteria used by the selection committee include academic achievement, goals, extracurricular activities, work experience and volunteer service.
  • Two $1,000 Key scholarships are available to students throughout the state. These are directed to those students who have no previous degree beyond high school and have had a lapse in their education for at least five years. Any student enrolled in an accredited school offering an associate or baccalaureate degree, who has completed at least one semester, may apply. Criteria used by the selection committee are goals, work experience and volunteer service since high school.
  • Two fine arts scholarships will be awarded statewide to students majoring in art, dance, drama or music. The amount of these scholarships vary. To apply, students must be currently enrolled in an accredited baccalaureate or graduate degree program, having completed at least one academic year.
  • The Twanette Nutter Fleming Music award stipulates the applicant be enrolled in a fully accredited course of study leading to a degree to teach music in a private, public or parochial school, having completed at least one academic year. The value of this award is $1,000.

Students wishing to apply for any of these scholarships are encouraged to contact Erp at 812-522-5264. Applications will be due Jan. 15.

The state selection committee will meet early in the spring to select recipients.
