Lions Club hosting Special Olympics tournament

Seymour Noon Lions Club is sponsoring its annual invitational Jackson County Special Olympics Basketball Tournament on Jan. 10.

The tournament will be Seymour Middle School, 920 N. O’Brien St., and will feature teams from Columbus, Nashville, North Vernon, Batesville, Corydon, Jeffersonville, New Albany, Bloomington, Evansville and Seymour.

There will be a special skills competition for those who are unable to play on a team. This is a time for the special athletes to have a good time and socialize with teams from around southern Indiana. Participation in this tournament qualifies teams for the state Special Olympic Tournament.

The Lions club will provide free lunches for players and coaches. The local McDonald’s, Jay C Food Stores and Pepsi Cola Company will donate food and drinks for the lunch, and the middle school athletics department will be operating the snack bar for family, guests and visitors.

Anyone who would like to help with this event will be welcome.

To volunteer, call Lions club member Frank Ruane at 812-521-0060. The public is invited to come and watch. The first game will tip off at 8:45 a.m., and the games will continue till the tournament ends. Both gyms will be utilized.

The tournament has been held for more than 30 years. Clint Payton is tournament director, and committee chairmen are Lions John Jennings, John Ulrey and Ruane.
