Lancers lose at home to Seymour

Seymour High School coach Kyle Clough had been waiting to see Isaiah Thomas have a breakout showing.

Thomas delivered Tuesday night.

“He was the difference in the game,” Clough said. “He got a lot of rebounds. He got a lot of tough baskets. He went to the free-throw line and got some free throws. We’ve been waiting for that kind of performance out of him. That’s a good sign for us because last year we wouldn’t have won a game like this.”

Thomas, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior, contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the visiting Owls to a 52-44 victory against Edinburgh in nonconference action.

Junior guard Toriek Miller led Seymour (3-7) with 16 points.

“He’s the guy that makes them go,” Edinburgh coach Drew Glentzer said of Miller.

The game was tied at 20 at halftime, with both teams struggling offensively.

“We weren’t really sharp in the first half, but give them credit. They played tenacious defense,” Clough said. “They played hard. Drew does a great job and gets a lot out of those guys.”

The Owls led 36-35 after three quarters and then scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to grab control. Seymour held a 16-9 edge in the final quarter.

“One of the things we talked about at halftime was win the quarter,” Clough said. “We came out flat and then came all the way back to win the quarter by one. I thought that really propelled us.”

The Lancers (5-5) were 15 of 47 from the field.

“They did a good job of taking us out of what we’ve been doing. We did too much standing around and we were not very aggressive. We missed a lot of easy shots. I think we ended up missing 12 or 13 layups or shots within two or three feet,” Glentzer said.

“I thought they did a nice job of taking things away from us. Live and remember, I guess. Hopefully we can get better from this moment and move forward. We were at no means at our best, but they had a lot to do with it.”

Senior Matt Heagy was high-scorer for the Lancers with 14 points.

The Owls will host Charlestown on Friday night. The Lancers will play at Arlington on Friday night and at Lutheran on Saturday night.
