Myra Jo Matthews Meadows, known to family and friends as Jody, passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at her home in Avon.

She was born in Connersville in 1940 and was the daughter of Robert L. and Magdalene B. Matthews of North Vernon.

In 1958, Jody graduated from North Vernon High School, where she was honored as Girls Athletic Association’s athlete of the year as a senior.

She obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and her master’s degree in nursing administration from Indiana University School of Nursing.

Upon returning to southern Indiana, she worked at Muscatatuck State Hospital, Jennings Community Hospital and Schneck Memorial Hospital in Seymour from 1976 to 1991.

In 1991, at age 50, she joined the United States Army and was stationed at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for four years. She enjoyed her time there immensely and had the chance to see a lot of the world. She particularly loved driving her car on the Autobahn and shopping in Turkey. Upon returning to the U.S., she worked at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Indianapolis until retiring in 2005.

She is survived by children, Mark Wood of Phoenix, Arizona, Beth (Bruce) Essex of New Palestine and Brian Meadows of Plainfield; grandchildren, Blanca Wood, Grant Wood and Ryan Wood of Phoenix, Morgan Essex and Amanda Essex of New Palestine and Adam Meadows, Clara Meadows and Andrew Meadows of Plainfield; great-granddaughter, Ashlynne Huey of Phoenix; and sisters, Carolyn Shepherd of Frostproof, Florida, and Robin (Larry) Johnson of Indianapolis.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, John Michael “Mike” Wood; and siblings, Robert L. Matthews II, Phillip Matthews and Kim Zawadzki.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. April 25 at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9350 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, with a reception to follow at a nearby location.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the John Michael Wood Memorial Aviation Endowed Scholarship at Indiana State University.
