Community rallies around North player

Speidel Night is set for Feb. 24 at Seymour High School’s Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium when the Owls boys basketball team hosts Columbus North.

Josh Speidel, a Columbus North High School senior basketball player, McDonald’s All-American candidate and University of Vermont recruit, was involved in a car accident Feb. 1 near Taylorsville.

Since that time, several fundraisers have been conducted to help Speidel’s family with medical expenses.

On Speidel Night, the boys parents club will conduct a pulled pork dinner, and the girls parents club will have a bake sale and a silent auction. All proceeds will go to the Speidel family. Speidel’s mother, Lisa, is an assistant principal at Margaret R. Brown Elementary School in Seymour.

The community can help by donating cash for the dinner or items for the bake sale or silent auction. For information, contact Janet Pollmann at 812-498-1228 or Lisa Wieneke at 812-528-9514

Also, #JoshStrong T-shirts will be sold at Tuesday’s boys basketball game between Seymour and Greensburg. The shirts must be pre-ordered so they can be handed out to wear for the Feb. 24 game. Each shirt is $10 with proceeds going to the Speidel family.

Game times for Tuesday and Feb. 24 are 6 p.m. for junior varsity and 7:30 p.m. for varsity.
