Dean L. Zike, 84, of Brownstown, passed away at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2015, at his home.

Born Dec. 20, 1930, in Freetown, he was a son of Dayton Henry and Bertha Iva Fields Zike. On Feb. 14, 1952, in Brownstown, he married Jane Mullen. She survives.

Dean was a member of Brownstown Christian Church. He and his wife operated Frostop Drive-in in Brownstown for several years. He also was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He had graduated from Freetown High School and received his bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana Central College and his master’s degree from Indiana University. He taught and coached basketball at Freetown, Clearspring, Cortland, Heltonville and Jennings County. After teaching, he was an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance. He was agent of the year in 1984 and 1985, and he retired in 1995.

He was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He was a sergeant in the 27th Regiment, 25th Division from 1952 to 1953 while he was in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed watching college basketball on television and was a Cincinnati Reds fan.

Besides his wife, survivors include two children, Denise (Ron) Hawn and Andrew Zike; brother, David (Mary) Zike; and several loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mildred Huber.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Winklepleck-Weesner Funeral Home in Brownstown with Gary Morning officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from noon until time of service on Monday at the funeral home.
