Sports scholarships available for girls

Sports scholarships in memory of Jessica Barkman are available.

Barkman was a 1991 graduate of Seymour High School, where she received the most valuable player award in volleyball, basketball and track during her senior year.

She attended Indiana State University on a volleyball scholarship.

Barkman died in a traffic accident in Texas in 1997. Following her death, a scholarship fund was started in her memory.

The purpose of the scholarships is to financially help young girls strengthen their athletic ability by attending sports camps, play club ball, etc.

The scholarships will be based on financial need, athletics ability and a coach’s recommendation.

Last year’s recipients were: Lauren James and Sarah Benefiel from Seymour High School, Oriana Morales and Abigail Voss from Seymour Middle School, and Halle Hehman from Brownstown Central Middle School.

Scholarship applications, which are due April 1, are available at Girls Inc. of Jackson County. They also are available on Girls Inc.’s website: Girlsincjackson.org.

For more information, contact Brenda Tracey at Seymour’s Girls Inc. at 812-522-2798.
