Sara Jane Wheatley Dewees, 66, of Columbus, died at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at her home.

Born July 6, 1948, in Columbus, she was the daughter of John E. and Kathryn Holcomb Wheatley, both of whom preceded her in death.

Sara was a graduate of Columbus High School and retired as a benefits manager after 32 years at Cummins Engine Co.

She was a member of New Hope Christian Church. She also volunteered as a foster grandparent at Smith Elementary School.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends, playing bingo and writing poems.

Survivors include her sons, Dustin Lee (Heather) Dewees of Franklin and Jason Ryan (Christina) Dewees of Taylorsville; brothers, John (Susan) Wheatley II of Columbus, Greg (Karen) Wheatley of Seymour and Brian Wheatley of Paris Crossing; sisters, Debbie (Bob) Wininger and Terri Hardin, both of Columbus; grandchildren, Kathryn Dewees, Joseph Dewees, Sierra Dewees, Deborah Dewees, Savannah Dewees and Madison Dewees; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides per parents, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Carl Hardin, who also died Wednesday.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Christian Church with the Rev. John Sichting officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church.

A private inurnment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Christian Church or American Diabetes Association through the funeral home.
