A two-vehicle wreck Sunday evening in Jennings County led to the death of a woman and left a second hospitalized.

The wreck, reported at 5:32 p.m. on North State Road 7, just south of Scipio, left Lou Ann Griffin, 61, of North Vernon dead, police reported.

The driver of the other vehicle, Vicki Cole, 56, also of North Vernon, was flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of her injuries. She was listed in good condition Monday morning, according to the hospital.

Emergency personnel were called to the crash on State Road 7 just north of County Road 500N, also known as Tyler’s Crossing, according to a news release from Lt. Mike Mowery with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department.

Upon arrival, they found both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated. There were no passengers in either vehicle, police said.

Police reported the wreck occurred as Cole was southbound in a blue 2010 Ford Focus and Griffin was northbound in a red 1997 Pontiac Grand Am.

Cole’s vehicle went far left of the centerline and traveled into the northbound lane, crashing head-on into Griffin’s car, police said. Both vehicles spun counterclockwise following the impact.

Cole’s vehicle came to rest in the road, while Griffin’s vehicle went off the side of the road into the grass.

Mowery said investigators are unsure of the factors that may have caused Cole’s vehicle to go left of center.

The highway was closed for about two-and-a-half hours during the investigation.

The wreck was investigated by Officer Anthony Maberry, who was assisted by county officers Tom Webster, Aaron Green and Mark Naylor, Indiana State Police troopers and personnel with Scipio-Geneva Township Fire Department, Jennings County EMS Rescue 20 and Stat Flight.
