James D. Long Sr., 86, of Tampico, and a lifelong resident of Jackson County, passed away at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

Born April 8, 1929, he was the son of Andrew Long and Sosy Collins Long, both of whom preceded him in death. On March 10, 1951, in Seymour, James married Barbara E. Hawkins, who passed away Nov. 8, 2006.

James worked for National Veneer Co. for 17 years, owned and operated Long’s Grocery Store in Tampico and was a longtime self-employed timber broker. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include four children, James D. “Squirrel” (Debbie) Long Jr. of Washington County, Thomas “Tommy” (Pricilla) Long of Tampico, Beverly Sue “Susie” (E. Larry) Jones of Scottsburg, and Bonnie E. (Fred R.) Robinson of North Vernon; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Homer, Lester, Kenneth and Dewey; a sister, Elizabeth; a grandchild, Amy Jones; and his son, John Andrew Long, who passed away in 2012.

A private ceremony and graveside service will be at Russell Chapel Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in memory of James to Russell Chapel Cemetery or Tampico Baptist Church in care of Adams Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Crothersville.
