Down 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Milan hit a single back into Trinity Lutheran’s right field with a runner heading for home from second base.

The ball was fielded by Cougars freshman Morgan Gabbard, who launched it to senior Liz Hill at home plate. Hill snagged the ball and got the tag-out, with inches to spare, to help secure an important win for her team.

The Indians had won nine straight games coming to Seymour.

In what was mostly a defensive battle, the Cougars came out on top against a battle-tested Indians team.

“Defensively, we played a great game,” Cougars coach Chad Goecker said. “The girls played seven hard innings. It was good to see.

“We just beat a good team; they were 13-3 coming into today. It’s a good game that gets us ready for the sectional. We’re playing well, this is a great win to boost our confidence.”

Following a scoreless first two-and-a-half innings, Hill drilled a lead-off homer over the center-field fence to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage in the third.

Cougars sophomore Kirstin Hoene hit an RBI single to give her team a 2-0 lead as senior Natalie Plofkin crossed home plate.

In the seventh inning, with two outs, Indians senior Kelli Smith homered to left field to narrow the deficit to a run.

Milan freshman Sierra Kern followed Smith with a double but would get tagged out on the next hit.

Trinity amassed seven hits on the afternoon.

“The girls were really being patient,” Goecker said. “We’ve struggled with our patience at the plate. They waited for their pitch tonight. They have responded well the past few weeks.”

Cougars senior Kaitlyn Wright picked up her fourth win on the mound, throwing six strikeouts and allowing seven hits with no walks while going the distance.

“(Wright) did a great job pitching tonight,” Goecker said. “She’s coming off an injury. She’s a couple weeks back from that and doing very well. The girls just did a great job, and I’m proud of them.”

The Cougars (13-7) will play Thursday at Silver Creek to conclude their 2015 regular season. The Cougars will play Crothersville on May 26 in the first round of the West Washington Class A Sectional
