Seymour to roll out Sidewalk Saturdays downtown

Seymour Main Street’s downtown Sidewalk Saturdays make their return this month.

Beginning June 20 and continuing on the third Saturday of each month through October, artists, food vendors, crafters and antique booths will be set up in front of downtown businesses on North Chestnut and West Second streets.

Some downtown stores also will participate by offering special sidewalk sales and promotions, organizers said.

Music and food will be available at One Chamber Square. There also will be a youth corner for eighth-graders or younger to sell produce they have grown, baked goods they have made, lemonade or crafts.

Hours are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Other dates are July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17. In the event of rain, the event will be canceled and not rescheduled.

This is the third year for the events.

Soni Birch, event chairwoman and owner of Picket Fence Antiques and Collectibles at 210 W. Second St., said she is excited about the continuation and growth of Sidewalk Saturdays and hopes it attracts more people to walk around, shop, eat and enjoy all that historic downtown Seymour has to offer.

Seymour Main Street President Julie Huff said last year’s Sidewalk Saturdays had about 40 vendors.

“We have about 15 signed up so far this year, but we are hoping that increases as we continue to get the word out,” Huff said. “We would love to have at least another 20 sign up by the first date.”

The main purpose behind Sidewalk Saturdays is to help support local downtown businesses, Huff said.

“It really drives a lot of traffic downtown,” she said. “The more variety of things we can offer downtown, the more business it generates. I’ve talked to a couple of business owners who said it’s really helped them.”

Vendors can still register by contacting Birch at 812-498-8991.

Items to be sold must be handmade by the vendors, grown locally or be antiques. At-home business merchandise including Scentsy, 31, Papparazzi, Longaberger and others will be allowed if space is available, Birch said.

Cost for vendors is $10 per Saturday or $35 for all five events.

Nonprofit and church groups will receive a reduced registration fee of $20 for all five dates. Other students, individuals or groups who would like to provide entertainment by performing or providing family-friendly activities also can register.

All fees paid by vendors go back to help promote future Sidewalk Saturday events, Huff said.

Anyone with questions about booth space, location and appropriate items can contact Birch at 812-498-8991.
