John M. “Mike” Shelton, 68, of Maryville, Illinois, formerly of Seymour, passed away at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville.

Born Dec. 16, 1946, in Seymour, he was the son of Frances Nicholson Shelton of Seymour and Ervan “Buck” Shelton, who preceded him in death.

He had worked in manufacturing for Harley Bag, Cosco and Cummins Engine Co. He had attended Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis. He was very passionate for deaf culture and rights. He was a member of Central Christian Church in Seymour. He enjoyed being very social and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and especially his children and grandchildren.

Besides his beloved mother, other survivors include his three children and their spouses, Patrick (Stacy) Shelton of Edwardsville, Illinois, and Amy (Benjamin) Hart and Scott Shelton, all of Seymour; seven grandchildren, Brendan, Kelsey and Katelyn Shelton, Ethan, Noah and Aiden Hart and Preston Shelton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard (Cheryl) Shelton of Columbus, Jack (Sandy Shelton) of Bloomington, and Steve (Marilyn) Shelton of Tulsa, Oklahoma; his former wife and mother of their children, Paula Kemp of Seymour; several aunts; nieces and nephews; and other extended family and many friends.

In celebration of his life, a memorial gathering will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

Memorial visitation also will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 3 p.m. Sunday at Central Christian Church, 1434 W. Second St., Seymour, with Pastor Robin Everhart officiating.

Private family burial will be at Dixon Chapel Cemetery in Medora.
