Family bike ride combines fun, financial literacy

0

Centra Foundation will host the Smart Money Family Fun Bike Ride beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The family-focused bike ride is different than most other rides, as participants will learn about money and the importance of using it wisely.

Activity stations along the ride will include money trivia; information about how to save, share and spend for elementary students; benefits of using a bike rather than a car; long-term saving; and more.

The ride will start and end at the Columbus Learning Center and offer two routes.

The main 14-mile route follows the People Trails through the Columbus park system. Stops will be at Columbus North High School, Mill Race Park, Lincoln Park and the Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum.

A shorter 5-mile route is designed for younger riders and walkers.

Prizes will be awarded at 1 p.m., including a Leap Pad and a Kindle. Additional prizes are available for riders who ask family and friends to make a financial donation to support financial literacy education. The top fundraiser in each age category will receive a $100 savings deposit. Riders will receive an entry in the prize drawing for each $10 of donations submitted.

A form to document fundraising is available at centrafoundation.org.

Early registration fee for children ages 4 through 13 is $5. Older students and adults may register for $25.

Registration is available by mail, online at centrafoundation.org or by visiting a Centra Credit Union branch.

Proceeds from the event will support and expand financial literacy programs that the foundation provides to elementary and high schools in Bartholomew and surrounding counties.
