Brownstown grad honored by Thundering Herd

Brownstown native and recent Marshall University graduate Sammie Bane earned Conference USA’s highest academic honor as 2014-15 Scholar Athlete of the Year for volleyball.

Bane was a four-year captain at setter for the Thundering Herd volleyball team, finishing her career ranked fourth on the school’s career list with more than 4,000 assists.

She was a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and garnered three Academic Medals. She graduated with a 3.96 GPA as a double major, receiving a Bachelor of Science in exercise science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology.

Bane served as president of Marshall’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was granted C-USA’s prestigious Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship in June.

She has been accepted into the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Indiana University.

Scholar-athletes were selected from C-USA’s full-time and affiliate institutions in 19 sports.
