All-star player

Thumbs-up to recent Trinity High School graduate Tommy Davis for being named to the South squad for the Indiana Football Coaches Association North-South All-Star Game. Davis, an offensive lineman, will be joined by former Cougars coach Anthony Levy, who was named an assistant coach for the squad. Levy recently accepted a position at a vocational college in Carmel.

Top educators

Thumbs-up to three local school administrators for being recognized by the Indiana Association of School Principals. Brownstown Central High School Principal Joe Sheffer was named high school principal of the year for District 8. Doug McClure, former principal at Seymour Middle School, was named middle school principal of the year for the district, and Kate DuBois, vice principal at Seymour High School was selected as vice principal of the year. The trio is now eligible for statewide administrator of the year. Those awards will be announced in November.

Public servant

Thumbs-up to Bedford attorney Brent Steele, who recently decided to not seek another term as a state senator a year from now. Steele, who has represented state Senate District 44 since 2004, said he decided not to run again because he wants to devote more time to his family and law firm. Steele also was a state representative from 1994 to 2002. Senate District 44 includes most of Jackson County with the exception of Grassy Fork, Vernon and Washington townships.

Top specialist

Thumbs-up to Seymour High School teacher Celeste Bowman, an Indiana Jobs for America’s Graduates program specialist, for recently being recognized for having a 100 percent graduation rate this year. It’s not the first time the program or Bowman have been recognized by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Still a crime

Thumbs-down to people who troll neighborhoods, taking items from unlocked vehicles, garages and homes. Just because something is unlocked doesn’t give anyone the right to take something that belongs to someone else, and it’s still against the law.

No license

A similar thumbs-down to people who are caught driving without a driver’s license time after time.
