Letter: Small agency relies on local United Way

To the editor:

We are a small agency with big goals. Offering English as a second language class for our foreign population is one of the many programs here at READ Jackson County/Plaza Latina.

We offer our Rosetta Stone lab five days a week for anyone who wants to learn English at their own pace. SMS READS is our middle school program to help struggling readers get caught back up.

Our newest programs are designed to help those with dyslexia and our “Little Free Libraries” are to promote both community and literacy. All of our programs are volunteer based, and we can always use more help.

“Alone we do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

Jackson County United Way helps us recruit volunteers. Jackson County United Way and its 20 partner agencies are a great source of information and collaboration. Last year as a new director when I had a question another director was easy to reach for answers. If we were a standalone agency with no support from the Jackson County United Way we wouldn’t be able to reach and help those we do.
