Joe Shirley Jr., 82, of Salem passed away at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2015, at Meadow View Health & Rehabilitation.

Born Oct. 27, 1932, in Tampico, he was the son of Joseph Eli Shirley and Francis Young Shirley Huls, both of whom preceded him in death. On May 12, 1951, he married Lee Anna Davidson Shirley, who survives.

Joe worked for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department from 1967 to 1996 and Arvin Industries in Columbus for 29 years. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police and Washington Masonic Lodge 23, where he was also past master. He also was a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and Indiana Shriners.

Other survivors include two daughters, Sandra Kay Donnell of Crothersville and Stephanie Jo Prewitt of Salem; a brother, Leon Shirley of North Vernon; five sisters, Maribell Hickerson and Janet Lewis, both of Crothersville, Jean Stark of Brownstown, Catherine Mantz of Seymour and Sherry Nava of Illinois; five grandchildren, Kalee Alberring, James Douglas Prewitt, Randa Petro, Samantha Donnell and Kara Bohall; and five great-grandchildren, Nehemiah, Asher, Gabriel, Parker and Abigale.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Randall Leroy Shirley; two brothers, Richard and Ermine Shirley; and two sisters, Ida Marie Morgan and Margarite Boas.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Weathers Funeral Home in Salem. Burial will be at Crothersville Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday.
