Seymour grad honored at Western Kentucky

Western Kentucky University volleyball player Jessica Lucas earned her second Conference USA Setter of the Week award.

The Seymour gradute helped Western Kentucky jump back into the AVCA Coaches Top-25 Poll for the second time this year. The Hilltoppers are ranked 23rd after extending their current winning streak to 11 matches with a perfect 2-0 record this past week.

In total, Lucas helped Western Kentucky record a team-hitting percentage of .346 as the Toppers swept Lipscomb on Sept. 29 and defeated conference rival Middle Tennessee in four sets Sunday.

Individually, the sophomore led the Toppers with 81 total assists on the week, an average of 11.57 per set. She tied libero Georgia O’Connell with a team-high 19 digs. Against Middle Tennessee, Lucas nearly notched a triple-double, finishing with 42 assists, 11 digs and 9 kills to go along with a pair of blocks.

On the year, Lucas paces Conference USA and ranks 46th nationally with an 10.80 assists per set average. She ranks second in the league and 16th nationally with 713 total assists.

For her career, Lucas became just the eighth player in program history to record 2,000 career assists and ranks eighth all-time with 2,051 total assists.

In addition to the national ranking, Western Kentucky (17-2, 4-0 C-USA) is slotted at No. 30 in the NCAA’s first RPI release of the year.
