Melvin G. Chastain, 65, of Seymour, passed away Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at Schneck Medical Center.

Born Feb. 28, 1950, in Campbellsburg in Washington County, Chastain was the son of Grant C. and Opal Stephenson Chastain, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Velma Elliott in 1968, and she preceded him in 1971. On March 6, 1976, in Seymour, he married Betty Pollert Nowling who survives.

Melvin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of West Washington High School and Indiana University where he achieved membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society. He worked as a certified public accountant at Arthur Anderson and Associates then went on to retire from Blue & Co. in 1990. After retiring from public accounting, he was a business man and chief financial officer of several local entities. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church Foundation, Indiana CPA Society, the American Institute of CPAs, Continental Association of CPAs, a life member of Sertoma, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Southern Indiana Center for the Arts, Indiana University Varsity Club, USGA and Seymour County Club. He enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family and friends.

Other survivors include his children, Tamara (Brian) Hamp, Brian (Andrea) Chastain and Jennifer (Jeffrey) Schneider; and grandchildren, Caroline and Madelyn Hamp, Kameron (Lindsey) Chastain, Paiton Chastain, Blake and Brooklyn Schneider.

Besides his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Denton; his brothers, Elmo and Dwayne Chastain; and his grandson, Alexander Chastain.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ralph Blomenberg, the Rev. Philip Bloch, the Rev. James Rodriguez and Vicar Alex Hoffmeyer officiating. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Voss Chapel and from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Foundation, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Seymour Meals on Wheels or donor’s choice of charity.
