Julia “Judy” R. Lester, 95, of Seymour passed away Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, at Covered Bridge Health Campus.

Born May 19, 1920, in North Vernon, she was the daughter of Adolph G. and Anna M. Grunert Gottwalles, both of whom preceded her in death. On Oct. 15, 1961, she married E. Morton Lester, who preceded her in death.

Judy graduated from North Vernon High School in 1938 and attended Indiana Business School in Indianapolis and Franklin College. She was a credit manager for Sears, Roebuck and Co. in Seymour from 1949 to 1965, and she also was a traveling auditor and troubleshooter for Sears during this period.

She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Seymour, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Seymour Elks Lodge 462, Columbia Club, Jackson County unit of Indianapolis Symphony and Epsilon Sigma Alpha, of which she was state president in 1959 and 1960, international president in 1974 and 1975 and chairman of the board for the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Foundation from 1976 to 1979.

She was a former director of the Seymour Girls Club, a former member of the League of Women Voters, former president of Credit Women’s Association of Seymour and a founding member of Voyager 1000, which was a private flying club.

Judy also had been a member of Schneck Medical Center Health Builders and the Community Foundation of Jackson County board. She was a member of the board of directors and governors for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and was active in fundraising for the hospital. She was an avid sports fan and loved flowers and gardening.

Survivors include her son, John (Gayle) Lester; a grandson, Jon David Lester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph A. Gottwalles, William E. Gottwalles and Francis C. Gottwalles; and a grandson, Jason Scott Lester.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with Father Dan Staublin officiating. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Voss Chapel in Seymour and from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church. There will be a rosary service at 3:45 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Schneck Medical Foundation or Community Foundation of Jackson County.
