Seymour graduate named volleyball tourney MVP

Top-seeded Western Kentucky University captured the program’s second consecutive Conference USA Tournament volleyball title with a four-set victory against No. 2 seed and host University of Texas-San Antonio (25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21) Sunday in the UTSA Convocation Center.

Sophomore setter Jessica Lucas, of Seymour, had a tremendous effort for Western Kentucky. The reigning Conference USA Setter of the Year recorded 54 assists, nine kills and eight digs.

Lucas added a match-high three service aces and was awarded tournament MVP honors for her performance.

On the weekend, Lucas finished with a total of 138 assists (12.5 per set), 22 killls (2 per set) and 21 digs (1.9 per set), five aces, 10 total blocks (0.9 per set).

With the victory, No. 21 Western Kentucky (31-3) earned the program’s second consecutive and ninth overall berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Hilltoppers will learn their fate Sunday when the pairings are announced.
