Local service group seeks Miracle workers

Angel trees for the Jackson County Sertoma Club’s annual Christmas Miracle project are up in five locations around the county, and donation boxes are available at two other businesses.

The trees are at the Seymour Library, Jackson County Visitor Center, Tractor Supply Co. and N Stylz Hair Design, all in Seymour, and the Brownstown Chamber of Commerce.

Each angel lists a child’s first name, sex, age and toy choice. Anyone willing to help may purchase the gift listed on the angel and deliver it unwrapped to Christmas Miracle Headquarters at Suite 311 in the Shops at Seymour on Tanger Boulevard. Headquarters hours are from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Donation boxes, new to the Christmas Miracle effort, are at Orscheln Farm and Home and Exist Salon and Spa, both in Seymour. The boxes are for filler gifts, which are small gifts, such as Matchbox toys, gloves, mittens, small blankets, etc., which will be included with the items given to children.

Christmas Miracle is not associated with any national or international toy drive. All gifts and money donated to the project will be used only for the children of Jackson County, said Ryan Begley, who is co-chairman of the program with John Fox.

“This program only exists because of the extraordinary charity of the people of this county,” Begley said.

For more than four decades, Christmas Miracle has helped provide gifts to children who might otherwise have no Christmas. Sertoma is a nonprofit service organization, whose name stands for SERvice TO MAnkind.

In 2014, 726 children were served through the program. Each child received two presents and a blanket. In 2009 and 2010, more than 900 children were served.

Applications for this year’s program are available at Christmas Miracle Headquarters, Jackson County Health Department, WIC office, city hall, Jackson County Department of Child Services and Human Services Inc. office, all in Seymour.

They also are at the Jackson County Public Library in Seymour and branches in Medora and Crothersville, all participating agencies of Jackson County United Way, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in Brownstown during regular business hours and at Bundy Brothers in Medora.

All applications must be received by Saturday.

Sertoma is participating in the Charity Tracker network to avoid any duplication of services. All applications must be signed by the parent or legal guardian.

Applications are accepted for children 12 and younger, and they must live in Jackson County and be home for the delivery of the gifts throughout the day on Christmas Eve.

Donations, in the form of toys or money, may be dropped off at the headquarters or mailed to Jackson County Sertoma Club, P.O. Box 841, Seymour, IN 47274.

For information, call the headquarters at 812-498-4581 during open hours.
