Owls finish as runners-up in Evansville

The Seymour wrestling team finished second of 11 teams with 229 points Saturday at the Evansville Memorial Invitational.

Indian Creek won the invite with 249 points and Evansville Memorial finished two points behind the Owls in the top-three.

Seven Seymour wrestlers made it to the finals and two came away as champions.

Brandon Penegar won the 120-pounds and John Shuffitt placed first in 126.

“Both Brandon and John wrestled well and had to come back from early deficits,” Owls coach Todd Weaver said. “Finally pinning their opponents helped put the team past third place team Evansville Memorial.”

The five wrestlers that placed second included Garret Johnson (138), Cheaney Reichenbacker (145), Zack Newton (152), Bradan Thomasma (182) and Tyler Bicknell (195).

John Newton claimed third in the 132.

Justin Ruddick (113), David Shuffitt (132) and Dalton Miller (285) each finished fourth on the day.

“We wrestled well today, but had some spots were we made some mistakes that cost us the entire match which took us out of competing for first place,” Weaver said. “(Just) 20 points is not a huge deficit in a tournament and the top-three teams were all within 22 of each other. We had our chance to bring home another tournament win and just came up short.

“The good part, I think, from this runner-up finish is our team’s mentality about the finish. Last year we finished fourth and were happy with it. This year our team was second and our kids were disappointed. Our kids aren’t interested in any moral victories. They want to win, and expect to win. That to me is progress.”
