Martha Gene Shelton-Harrell, 87, of Brownstown, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, at Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown.

Born Aug. 19, 1928, in Conway, Arkansas, she was the daughter of William Michael and Susan Turner Banks, both of whom preceded her in death. In August 1942, she married William C. Shelton, who passed away Dec. 10, 1979. She then married the Rev. Elza Michaels, who passed away in 1989. She then married James Harrell, who passed away in 2003.

Martha Gene was a member of First Pentecostal Church in Brownstown, where she enjoyed being a beacon to influence young people. She had worked at EMC Plastics in Medora. She enjoyed cooking. At Hoosier Christian Village, she had many friends among the residents and staff.

Survivors include a son, James (Lisa Ann Stahl) Shelton; brothers, Louis (Wilma Kay) Banks of Millport, Joseph Banks of Columbus, Frederick Paul Banks of Elgin, Illinois, and William David “Bill” Banks of Seymour; grandchildren, Ronald Wesley, James Robert, William Andrew, Mary Jo, Martha, Melissa, Rebecca, Amy Jo, Ashley, Angela and Vera; and several great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Shelton; daughters, Zella Sue Lebline and Martha Ann Shelton; and sisters, Donna Dean, Geraldine Banks and Gladys Haines.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at First Pentecostal Church in Brownstown, with the Rev. Ron Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service at the church.
