John Robert Hurless, 91, of Seymour, passed away at 11:56 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016.

Born Feb. 2, 1924, in Hartley, Iowa, he was the son of Leon Robert and Grace Slick Hurless, both of whom preceded him in death. On Oct. 10, 1948, in Galien, Michigan, he married Thelma Marie Stickle.

John was a member of Central Christian Church of Seymour. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from September 1943 to May 1946. He retired from the United States Department of the Army, Rock Island Arsenal, after 22 years of service. John had been an employee of the FBI for 12 years. He was a member of Seymour Evenings Lions Club and National Active and Retired Federal Employees chapter 944. He was a volunteer master gardener in Scott County, Iowa.

Other survivors beside his wife of 67 years include children John (Diane) Hurless Jr., Kenneth (Christine) Hurless, Kay (Glen) Alden and Robert (Rebecca) Hurless; grandchildren, Sara Hurless, Becky Yates, Matt Hurless, Ryan Hurless, Lisa Jaeger, Kassie Alden, Robbie Alden and Nick Hurless; and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Henry, Ashton, Makenley and Sam.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Wesley Jaeger; two sisters, Virginia Uhland and Ruth Ford; and a brother, George Hurless.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Voss Chapel, Seymour. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47, Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from noon until time of service Saturday.
