Red hats raise awareness, keep newborns cozy

More than 5,000 babies born in Indiana in February, including those at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, will receive red hats courtesy of the American Heart Association’s Little Hats, Big Hearts program.

February is American Heart Month, and the week of Feb. 7 to 14 is Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and in the Hoosier State, and congenital heart defects are the leading birth defect in newborns. The Little Hats, Big Hearts program raises awareness about both.

The hats were hand-knitted by volunteers.

Volunteers interested in donating materials or knitting hats for next year or hospitals that would like to participate in the program should call the heart association at 317-732-4700.
