Why do you think you would be the best candidate to fill that role?

I would be the best candidate for District 2 commissioner because of my history of leadership and involvement in a wide variety of roles over the span of the last two decades. Currently, I serve on the Hamilton Township Advisory Board, Jackson Ambulance Authority Board, the county 911 board and Jackson County Emergency Management Council. I am a member of the Jackson Jennings Co-op board of directors and serve nationally on the Land O’Lakes ag executive council. Through involvement in these roles, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with a variety of different people and personalities and have successfully worked together with others through differing opinions, thoughts and ideals to work toward the achievement of a common goal. I am very competent working with a budgeting process and general business operations. I understand to be an effective commissioner takes many hours of commitment, and at this time in my life and career, I have the time to devote to do the job very well.

There are several issues confronting county officials at this time including jail overcrowding, the need for a permanent location for Jackson Superior Court II in Brownstown and the need for a shelter for stray dogs. How would you address those issues if elected?

I will approach these issues as I have worked and dealt with other issues that have been presented before me in the past. I will gather information and review available data and work collaboratively with all parties involved in the matter. I will seek creative solutions to these issues and bring fresh ideas to the table for discussion and consideration. After the basic background work is completed, I will formulate a solution based on the findings and make a decision that will positively affect the majority of citizens in Jackson County.

Are there any county services that need to be improved, added or eliminated?

As a citizen, I am generally satisfied how the county operates. As I would become familiar with county services as a new commissioner, I would certainly ask questions, observe and make recommendations for how services could be improved to operate more effectively. I feel there are always opportunities to streamline and improve inefficiencies, especially with the use of technologies available today.

Why did you decide to run for office?

Serving as a county commissioner is something I’ve wanted to do for years. As a lifelong resident of Jackson County, I have a vested interest in what happens in our community and thereby have a lifelong commitment to the betterment of our county.

What do you think it will take to win the support of the voters?

With a varied age of voters, several approaches need to be taken to gain support. Many residents still look for the personal touch of door-to-door and meeting up at community events, while the younger generation looks to social media such as websites and Facebook. I am using all of the above approaches to meet up with the voters in the county. To gain support, it all comes down to integrity, being personable, knowledgeable and being accessible to the people I represent.
