Two Seymour men were pulled from their vehicle after it left the road, hit a tree and caught fire Sunday morning on Interstate 65 near Uniontown.

The men, 19-year-old Norton Baughman and 22-year-old Justin Lane, were flown by separate air ambulances to regional hospitals after the incident reported at 6:36 a.m., according to a news release from Officer Jesse Hutchinson with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

No information about their conditions or where the two were flown was available Sunday.

Hutchinson said Baughman told police he had been driving north when Lane grabbed the steering wheel and pulled the vehicle off the east side of the road. The vehicle hit the tree and eventually caught fire.

He said the investigation continues and police believe alcohol was a contributing factor.

Hutchinson said some Good Samaritans helped get the two out of the burning vehicle.

County Officer Rob Henley and Crothersville Officer Chris Cooper assisted along with personnel from Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and Crothersville Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department.
