Jessie Ruth Lewis, 92, of Seymour, passed away Monday, April 18, 2016, at Lutheran Community Home in Seymour.

Born July 19, 1923, in Seymour, she was the daughter of Harry R. and Jessie Hall Bobb, both of whom preceded her in death. On Dec. 23, 1965, in Monroe County, she married Charles F. Lewis, who preceded her death in 1994.

Jessie was a 1941 graduate of Shields High School and a 1945 graduate of Hanover College. She received her master’s degree in education from Indiana University in 1961 and did additional graduate work at Purdue University and University of Southern California.

She worked for 42 years in public school systems — 12 years as a biology teacher at New Albany High School, one year in the Los Angeles, California, school system and 29 years with Seymour Community Schools. The last 19 years were served as dean of girls at Seymour High School. She retired in 1987.

Jessie was a member of Central Christian Church in Seymour and an associate member of Sun City Christian Church in Sun City, Arizona. She served on the Schneck hospital guild and was on the board of directors from 1996 to 2000. She also was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 134, B.P.O. Elks Auxiliary of Seymour, the national and state organizations for retired teachers and the 1827 Society of Hanover College.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Harriett B. Combs.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Burkholder Funeral Chapel in Seymour.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service Thursday.
