Two men were arrested after police observed them taking gasoline from a residence.

Kyle R. England, 33, of Brownstown and Darrell W. Crow, 38, of Columbus were arrested for theft and possession of paraphernalia following a traffic stop late Monday night.

At about 11:45 p.m. Monday, Officer Rick Meyer with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department observed suspicious activity in the 5800 block of North Base Road. He said a residence in that area had been hit by theft several times in the past couple of weeks.

Meyer said he observed a vehicle stop along the roadway, and a person got out of the vehicle and went toward private gas tanks at a residence.

That person then returned to the vehicle, and the driver went north on Base Road. Meyer stopped the car at the intersection of Base Road and State Road 258, where he came in contact with England and Crow.

Meyer said he found a gas can in the back seat of the vehicle. Reserve Officer Kevin Settle arrived and assisted Meyer with the stop.

Meyer, county Officer Jesse Hutchinson and Indiana Conservation Officer Nate Berry went to the residence on Base Road and spoke to the homeowner, who confirmed someone had tampered with the gas tanks.

England and Crow were arrested and taken to the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown, where both are being held on $705 bonds.
