Highway down to single lane for bridge work

The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to restrict traffic on U.S. 31 at the Muscatatuck River to a single lane, beginning Monday.

The purpose of the restriction is for contracted crews to rehabilitate the bridge located 0.8 miles south of Interstate 65 at the Jackson-Scott county line.

E&B Paving is the state’s contractor charged with making repairs, scouring piers, widening shoulders, replacing bridge rail and paving new approaches as part of a $1,746,500 project to install a new bridge deck overlay on U.S. 31’s Muscatatuck River bridge between Crothersville and Austin. The application will be a 1¾-inch latex modified concrete deck overlay.

Work is being done on half the bridge at a time. U.S. 31’s northbound right lane will close to traffic Monday for Phase I of the project, weather permitting. Temporary traffic signals located at either end of the bridge will allow motorists to cross one direction at a time in the southbound lane.
