History center plans barbecue cookoff

The Jackson County History Center plans to conduct the Jackson County Backyard BBQ Cookoff on May 20 and 21 at the center’s campus, 105 N. Sugar St., Brownstown.

Three different classes of meats — chicken, ribs and pork — will be judged. Water and electric are available.

The entry fee is $50 through May 11 and $60 afterward. Awards, including people’s choice, will be announced at 4 p.m. May 21. The event includes a build-a-burger/showmanship at noon May 21. The center also will have porkburgers available for sale May 21.

Contest rules are nonsanctioned, backyard-style contest; however, Kansas City Barbeque Society rules apply except in cases of difference in contest format or procedure. The contest coordinator’s decisions are final.
