Thumbs-up to the more than 1,000 volunteers who participated in the Jackson County United Way’s 20th annual Day of Caring. The event was spread out over a period of days after rain washed out many projects on the day’s original date of May 10. The volunteers, however, were able to complete a total of 160 projects ranging from painting, raking and landscaping to working on art projects with adults with developmental difficulties.SurvivingThumbs-up to all the cancer survivors and supporters who participated in the annual Jackson County Relay for Life event on May 20 at Seymour High School. By the end of the day, a total of $44,871 had been raised to help fund cancer research and programs through the American Cancer Society by the teams involved and through individuals and business sponsorships.

Senior salute

Thumbs-up to Brownstown Central High School’s softball team for honoring not only its senior players on May 14 but for acknowledging and honoring senior Taylor Reynolds, who played on the opposing Trinity Lutheran High School team.

Track stars

Thumbs-up to the Seymour High School girls track and field team for capturing its fifth straight sectional crown May 17. A related thumbs-up goes to local sectional titlists, including Owls’ Claire Loebker, Megan Winter, Abby Voss and Oriana Morales, 4×800-meter relay; Loebker, Mikaela Grout, Morales and Alexis Gross, 4×400-relay; Ashton Chase, 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs; Emma Brock, 800-meter run; Grout, pole vault; Brownstown Central’s Trentity Vaught, discus; and Trinity Lutheran’s Hailley Peters, high jump title.

Thumbs-up to the Seymour High School boys track and field team for winnings its first sectional title May 19 at Bedford North Lawrence. A related thumbs-up to the local track and field athletes who won events, including Seymour’s Cameron Deppen, who took the top prize in the 1,600-meter run; Brownstown Central’s Joe Barnes for winning both the shot put and discus and Jacob Bollinger for winning the pole vault; and Trinity Lutheran’s A.J. Goecker, who won the 3,200-meter run.

Tennis titlists

Thumbs-up to the Seymour girls tennis team for winning the school’s fifth straight sectional crown. Members of the team’s starting lineup are Megan Burle, Lou-Anne Hoarau, Lindsey Hume, Emma Wood, Hallie Crenshaw, Addie Rudge and Katie O’Mara.
