NORTH VERNON

The contractor for Indiana Department of Transportation’s auxiliary lane project on State Road 3/South State Street in North Vernon began replacing asphalt pavement between U.S. 50 and Smith Street on Monday.

Flaggers are directing single-lane, one-direction-at-a-time traffic around moving work sites.

Once intermediate pavement has been replaced, crews will overlay South State Street with a surface lift of asphalt. Subsequent work includes paving street and drive approaches, adjusting the height of manhole risers and placing pavement markings. INDOT officials anticipate these operations will be ongoing — weather permitting — for two weeks.

Dave O’Mara of North Vernon is the state’s contractor for this $3 million project. INDOT’s contract called for widening and reconstructing the north-south highway, installing sanitary and storm sewer lines and building sidewalks with ADA-compiant curb ramps.
