‘Party band’ The Flying Toasters playing at CityJam

Looking for a fun way to spend a hot summer evening?

Then you might want to head downtown Thursday night for the kickoff of Seymour’s annual CityJam summer concert series.

The free show will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on East Second Street between Indianapolis Avenue and North Ewing Street. Those attending should bring their own lawn chairs for seating.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase beginning at 5:30 p.m.

This is the fourth year for CityJam.

Performing for the first time at the event will be The Flying Toasters, an Indianapolis band made up of five men, Jason Hayes, Matt Mellinger, Orvis Kirkman, Rodney Stepp and Mark Christopher Rohrman, and three women vocalists, Staci McCrackin, Kelly Frazer and Holly Streit.

Describing their sound as “party band” music, the group performs rock, rhythm and blues and radio hits from the 1970s to current tunes.

The band, formed in late 2003 by Hayes and his father, Bill Hayes, began playing shows in March 2004 and is featured at many venues and events in Indiana.

Other concert dates are July 21 with Tad Robinson, who is returning for his second CityJam performance; Aug. 18 with the Woomblies Rock Orchestra; and Sept. 15 with Rumors, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band.

CityJam raises money through sponsors and donations for the Southern Indiana Center for the Arts in Seymour.

Sponsors this year include The Tribune, JCB and Seymour Crossing.

“CityJam has been very well-received, and we are pleased with our sponsors, vendors and everyone that comes out to support us,” said Darnell Dukes, executive director of Southern Indiana Center for the Arts.

The concerts are a great way to get the word out about what the arts center offers, including summer art camps for youth, ballet classes, private art lessons and instructional art classes, festivals and events and a public gallery for displaying local artists’ work, Dukes said.

“I like the fact that it’s outdoors and it brings people in the community together in the downtown,” she said of the concerts. “It’s a time for people to come together and have a good time.”
