Columbus man flown to Indy after wreck

A 19-year-old Bartholomew County man was flown to Indianapolis after his vehicle hit a tree near Cortland early Sunday morning, police report.

Ronald K. Whitis of rural Columbus was driving a 1992 GMC east on State Road 258 when he fell asleep, causing the vehicle to cross the centerline and go off the north side of the road hitting a utility pole and a house, according to a report from Jackson County Sgt. Stan Darlage.

Whitis was treated at the scene by Jackson County Emergency Medical Service personnel before being taken to the Statflight helipad in Seymour. He was then flown north to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment.

The name of the hospital and Whitis’ condition was not available Sunday afternoon. Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Department assisted.
