Joseph Edward Welch, 76, of Scipio passed away at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at his residence.

Born Oct. 13, 1939, in Geneva Township, Jennings County, he was the son of Clarence Ed and Mary Olive Taylor Welch, both of whom preceded him in death. On Sept. 19, 1959, at First Baptist Church in North Vernon, he married Bonita Fern Taylor, who survives.

Joseph was employed with Cummins Inc. for 31 years, retiring as a welder March 31, 1990. He had worked part time as a welder for Miller Enterprises and was retired from farming. He was a 1957 graduate of North Vernon High School and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in North Vernon and Jennings County Republican Party. He enjoyed following the stock market, lunch with friends after church on Sunday and attending events at Park Theatre Civic Centre and reunions of the Vawter Family Association. He collected mechanical and iron banks. As a woodworker, he had a special talent for making band saw boxes. He dearly loved his family and was proud of their accomplishments.

Other survivors include sons, Anthony Brian Welch, Darren Michael Welch and Alan Wayne (Yu Kyong “Karen”) Welch, all of Indianapolis; grandchildren, William Frederick Welch, Jonathan Andrew Welch and Anna Louise Swenson, all of Indianapolis; and sisters, Janet H. (John) Jones of Scipio and Marylynne Sharp of Seymour.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Brent Welch.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Bob Ochs and Brother Ricky Persons officiating. Burial will at Vernon Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday.
