County sees new coaches, facilities for fall sports

0

There is a lot of new when it comes to Jackson County high school sports this fall.

There are new facilities, athletics directors and coaches, just to name a few.

Practice for high school golf teams began last week, and the first competition for county teams is today with Brownstown Central and Seymour competing in the Seymour Invitational at Shadowood Golf Course.

Trinity Lutheran will open Monday against Henryville at Champions Point.

The Cougars have a new coach in Nate Benter.

He was an assistant coach with the Trinity boys’ golf team last spring.

The other fall sports teams, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross-country, tennis, volleyball and football began practice on Monday and will have their first contests beginning the week of Aug. 15.

All three boys’ tennis teams will be under the guidance of new coaches: Jennifer Miller at Seymour, Scott Dittmer at Brownstown and Danny Frastaci at Trinity Lutheran.

Miller has been the girls’ tennis coach at Seymour for the past few years, while Dittmer and Trinity are new to their programs.

Angie Lucas will coach the Seymour volleyball team until Holly Birdsong returns from maternity leave partway through the season.

The Seymour and Crothersville athletic programs will operate this school year with new athletics directors.

Kirk Manns is the new athletics director at Seymour, and Greg Kilgore is heading up that department at Crothersville.

Kilgore has been on the teaching staff at Crothersville for several years and was boys’ basketball and golf coach last school year while Manns is new to Seymour.

The Seymour soccer teams and football team will play on turf fields this fall.

The boys and girls soccer teams practiced on their new turf Monday. The soccer teams will conduct scrimmages Aug. 13 with ribbon cutting to follow.

The first home matches for the Owls will be Aug. 16 for the boys against Brown County, and Aug. 25 for the girls against Scottsburg.

The football field at Bulleit Stadium is not ready for practice.

The Owls are practicing on the grass field they have practiced on in the past and will have their Purple White intrasquad scrimmage at Seymour Middle School Saturday night.

The Owls will begin practice on the new field next week and will host Corydon Central for a scrimmage Aug. 12.

Seymour will travel to Silver Creek on Aug. 19 before hosting Jeffersonville on Aug. 26.
