A head-on collision east of Seymour on Tuesday night resulted in two people being flown by helicopter to hospitals, police report.

The investigation found that Adam Castetter, 35, of Seymour was driving east in the 11500 block of U.S. 50 at about 8:30 p.m. when he came upon a stalled vehicle, had to move into the westbound lane to get around it and struck another vehicle head-on, said Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers.

The driver of the westbound vehicle, Michael Hyden, 24, of Scipio attempted to avoid hitting Castetter’s vehicle but was unsuccessful, Carothers said.

Hyden and his passenger, Helen Branum, 26, of North Vernon, were transported from the scene by Jackson County Emergency Medical Services personnel to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. They later were flown out by medical helicopters.

Hyden had non-life-threatening lower-leg injuries, while Branum had non-life-threatening internal injuries, Carothers said.

Castetter was treated and released at the scene, Carothers said.

Also responding to the scene were Lt. Darin Downs with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Seymour Fire Department and Officer Mike Cooper and Lt. John Watson with the Seymour Police Department.
