Arthur V. Smith Jr., 89, of North Vernon passed away at 9:39 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, at his residence.

Born March 27, 1927, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Arthur Smith Sr. and Esther Judkins Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Betty Joan Bland, who also preceded him in death Oct. 12, 1977.

Arthur graduated from Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis. He had worked as a heavy equipment salesman and had served in the United States Army. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AmVets, Knights of Columbus and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking, painting and camping.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy (Mike) Bischoff of Batesville and Robin Smith of Miami, Florida; three sons, Arthur (Gerri) Smith III, of Seymour, Anthony Smith of North Vernon and Kelly (Katie) Smith of Chicago, Illinois; a sister, Marjorie Winebrenner of Auburn; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Marie Bischoff; two sisters, Vera Ruth Smith and Donna Smith; and two brothers, William Edward Smith and Robert Smith.

A graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Holy Family Cemetery in Oldenburg with the Rev. David Kobak officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service in North Vernon.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Wounded Warrior Project.
