Shirley Ann Monroe, 81, of Columbus passed away shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility, where she, her family and friends received exceptional care and support.

She was with her husband of 63 years, Robert “Bob;” sons, Chris and Craig; and her daughter-in-law, Becky, at the time of her passing. In her final days, she was able to see her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, many friends and her pastor. She had been in failing health for the past several months.

Born April 2, 1935, in Alfordsville, she was the daughter of Roger and Freda Ledgerwood McKinney, both of whom preceded her in death. On Aug. 30, 1953, in Seymour, she married her husband, Bob.

She was the oldest of three children and graduated from Seymour High School in 1953.

Her first job was at Welmer’s Jewelry Store in Seymour. She followed her husband to Fort Hood, Texas, after he enlisted in the U.S. Army. She returned to Seymour shortly after the birth of her son, Chris, at Fort Hood.

After Bob completed his enlistment, they lived in Seymour, where their son, Craig, was born. They moved to Columbus, where she became employed at Cummins Engine Co. She worked in benefits for a number of years and then in retirement benefits after the department was divided into insurance benefits and retirement benefits. While working as retirement benefits administrator, she worked with many people who retired and others, who all spoke very highly of her competence, patience and compassion. She retired from Cummins after more than 30 years of employment.

Survivors include two children, Chris and Craig (Becky) Monroe, all of Columbus; five grandchildren, Cole Monroe of Las Vegas, Nevada, Carrie (Derek) Monroe Henderson, who lives in Fairfield, California, with her stepdaughter, Jordan Henderson; Danielle (Ashley) Boyd, who lives in Weatherford, Texas, with her three children, Clark, Daphne and Emmett; Clayton, who is in the U.S. Navy and is stationed in Kings Bay, Georgia; and Madison, who lives in Columbus with her son, Henry, and Henry’s father, Glen (Robbie) Alden Jr. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Pat McKinney of Alabama and Phyllis McKinney Hess of Columbus.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her younger brothers, Gordon McKinney, who lived in Alabama, and Scott McKinney, who lived in Columbus.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Westside Community Church in Columbus with Pastor Dennis Aud officiating. Burial will follow in Sodom Cemetery near Scottsburg.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility or Westside Community Church of Columbus.
