CANTWELL, Alaska — High water is preventing emergency responders from recovering the body of an Anchorage man who died in a creek near Cantwell.

A witness tells Alaska State Troopers that 55-year-old Walter Maillelle (may-LEL) rolled his all-terrain vehicle Monday and fell into Brushkana Creek. He was not seen alive again.

The witness called troopers from the Denali Highway.

Emergency responders spotted the body of Maillelle about 30 miles from Cantwell but could not reach it on the other side of the creek.

When a boat arrived, the body was no longer at the location.

Troopers by boat searched for the body Tuesday but could not find it in the muddy and high water conditions. They plan to search again when the water level significantly recedes.

Maillelle’s next of kin has been notified.
