TAMPA, Fla. — Investigators say a suspect in an aggravated battery case rammed his vehicle into a deputy’s patrol car during a traffic stop near Tampa.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy was knocked to the ground late Tuesday. According to a sheriff’s news release, the deputy fired his weapon at least once at the suspect’s vehicle. But the suspect drove away. It’s not known whether the bullet hit him or the vehicle.

Officials say the deputy was in fear for his life. He was checked out by medics at the scene.

Arriving deputies began searching for the suspect. A short time later, they spotted his abandoned vehicle. The man has not been located.

No further details were immediately available.
