LAS VEGAS — A Nevada sheriff is investigating the death of a jail inmate who officials said was found dead in his cell.

The Nye County sheriff’s office says deputies were counting heads early Tuesday at the detention center in Pahrump when they found the man alone and unresponsive on the floor of his cell.

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue pronounced the man dead, and the Clark County coroner’s office in Las Vegas was asked to conduct an autopsy.

The man’s name wasn’t immediately released. A sheriff’s office statement didn’t say how long he’d in jail or what crime he had been accused of.

Sheriff’s Sgt. David Boruchowitz (buh-ROOK’-uh-witz) says no foul play was apparent.

He says the man didn’t notify jail staff of health issues or ask for help.
