PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia police say a 68-year-old widow found stabbed to death in her home along with a former male friend was the victim of a murder-suicide.

The bodies of Virginia McLaughlin and 60-year-old Lawrence Carty were found in the woman’s northeast Philadelphia home on Tuesday. Both had been stabbed and police say Carty’s wounds were self-inflicted.

Neighbors tell police that Carty and McLaughlin were friends, but that ended last week after an argument. Neighbors who noticed McLaughlin hadn’t brought in the trash cans from in front of her well-kept home called police who found the bodies Tuesday afternoon.

McLaughlin had lived in the home for 25 years and her husband died in 1999. Her adult sons had also since moved out of the residence.
