BEAUMONT, Calif. — Police officers in Beaumont have shot and killed a man suspected of approaching drivers in the drive-through window of a Burger King restaurant with a hatchet and a stick.

Police said in a statement the shooting occurred when officers confronted the man around noon Saturday. They did not specify what led officers to fire their weapons.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died. His name was not released until relatives could be notified of his death.

Police said one officer was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.

Beaumont is about 70 miles east of Los Angeles.
